The Jets began as the Titans of New York, a charter member of the American Football League in 1960. The name "Titans" was intended to be a play on "Giants", New York's highly successful NFL franchise. The team played its home games at the decrepit Polo Grounds and did not draw spectators well, despite fielding respectable teams that finished .500 (7–7) in their first two seasons. However, after the 1962 season, when the Titans finished 5–9, the team's future in New York was in doubt. The team was saved from bankruptcy by a group including Sonny Werblin and Leon Hess who bought the team from Harry Wismer in 1963. The team was renamed the New York Jets and their team colors changed from blue and gold to kelly green and white. Shortly thereafter, the Jets hired as their coach Weeb Ewbank, who had won back-to-back NFL championships with the Baltimore Colts and was one of the most respected coaches in the game. -Wikipedia.com
